This is what happens when nerds marry

Well, we’re back from Chicago, and while it was fun we are really glad to be home!
Points of note:

  • When ordering a burger in a restaurant, Gavin was asked “medium or medium rare?”
  • In the buffet breakfasts and lunches we were given, there was a serious shortage of fruit! I saw one banana, and there was one melon salad served with lunch. When I ordered a sautee dish in a restaurant, the veggies were all processed!
  • Although we were warned that Chicago is a dangerous city, especially for Canadians, it sure seemed less sketchy than Montreal. The sidewalks were bigger, there seemed to be less homeless people/beggers.
  • We were way out of our league. I had no idea what people were talking about, maybe 1/2 the time.
  • I do not foresee craving McDonald’s for quite some time.
Giant reflective bean we saw in Chicago

I did think that it was a pretty good experience though. At the very least, the conference inspired Gavin (again) to start his own business. I thought the most interesting part of what we were doing, was that of the people that Gavin, Kristel and I spoke to, one person had a college degree, and the rest had really no official education. It really makes me wonder about my investment…

When we went downtown the first time, the people that we were with led the way to an outdoor art exhibit which included a giant reflective bean, and a bizarre giant animated staring/spitting contest…

Giant face spitting.

Imagine two of these, with different faces, looking at each other. Right. You got it.

In other news, I’ve decided to start a new collection. Corelle plates! Think about it! They are the perfect thing to collect! So many different patterns available! So stackable and easy to store! So practical, and useable every day!

My plan is to have no more than 2 of any design per plate size. I’m not collecting anything else right now (no cups or saucers or glasses etc.) but in the future I might branch out into bowls.

I’ve only been buying them in thrift stores so far, and I’ve already gotten 25 plates in 8 different patterns. I had been putting them in my mom’s cupboard with her plates, but I think that once she gets annoyed with my plates taking over, she may kick me out!!

Anyway, so far my favourite pattern is “Country Cottage” of which I have one plate.

I also have a couple plates that remind us of Gavin’s family, because they have a whole set of “Old Town Blue,” and we have quite a few of “Golden Butterfly” which my mom also has a dish in as part of her collection. (Superfluous shot of Crazy Daisy).

Anyway, if you’re ever curious about my collection (like right now, no?) I’m tracking what I have on my Corelle Page

That’s all until next time!

Coming back from the php|tek conference, I’ve made a list of some PHP frameworks that I’d like to get some experience with. I’m worried that Code Igniter is so easy though that I won’t like working with anything else!

By the discussions surrounding them I think many of these frameworks come with a program that creates a database for you depending on your answers to a series of questions. This, I don’t like. I want full control over my database design. As Maggie Nelson put it in her talk Angering Database Gods, Active Record classes can be very bad for proper and efficient database interactions.

Nevertheless, I should at least give these a try.

There aren’t that many tutorials on how to use jQuery and Code Igniter together. I’ve written a bit on how to do some Ajax with jQuery and Code Igniter here, on the Code Igniter Forums. With jQuery, Ajax is pretty easy to do, once you figure out how to get it working once. The toughest part is figuring out how to have it send POST data to the right function of the right controller. If you want a working example, Download it Here. Be sure to read the README.txt! Don’t forget, the important issue when doing javascript of any kind is to make sure it degrades nicely - it has to work even if Javascript is turned off!

Cubescape is really fun. It’s like Lego but on the internet.

Also, Phun is, well… fun! Download it here.

Well, that’s enough nerdiness for now, I’ve got to go get ready for the PHP conference!

Cheers

We’re going to Chicago! Kristel’s dad travels a lot and he found us some nice deals on hotel and flights. The conference has wireless internet access, so we can laptop it up while we’re there. Hopefully we can do some networking while we’re there and I can get my foot in the door for a sweet career. At the very least we’ll learn something and have some fun in Chicago. Detoxing is not as fun as it sounds. I want pizza…
