Joey is reading through the church directory.
Joey:
Hmm… Pastor Miriam, she’s nice. She has a really fun dog. Hmm… Mr. and Mrs. S** just had their 60th wedding anniversary. That’s a good thing.
Martha:
Hey Joey!
Joey:
(Looks at crowd, directory, crowd) Martha, does it seem like not everyone here is in the directory?
Martha:
It’s not like your family is in the directory either Joey.
Joey:
Oh, good point. Ooh! Mrs. P**. That’s L** and B** mom, that would be great!
Martha:
That would be great for what?
Joey:
Oh, for when my parents forget me.
Martha:
WHAT? Why are your parents going to forget you? That doesn’t make any sense.
Joey:
It’s bound to happen! It even happened to Jesus! If Jesus parents can forget him, why wouldn’t mine forget me? I’m not even Jesus!
Martha:
Oh man, you know, I’m an only child, so my parents couldn’t forget me, but there are 8 kids in your family! And you always crawl behind bushes and trees looking for your bugs.
Joey:
I know!! What if my mom thinks I’m in her car, and my dad thinks I’m in his VAN? but I’m not in EITHER!?
Martha:
I’m just teasing!! I don’t think that your family is going to forget you! They haven’t forgotten about you yet, have they?
Joey:
No…
Martha:
And 8 kids is still way less people than were travelling with Jesus. They were travelling not just their family, but all their relatives and friends were there too! That’s a lot of people!
Joey:
Yah! You’re right, there are way less people for my parents to take care of! But, it could still happen! Didn’t you see Home Alone? That movie was so scary!
Martha:
Joey, it’s okay to have a backup plan, in case something scary happens, like being left behind, but you shouldn’t worry about it! You’re right though, if you need help and you’re parents aren’t there, the church can help you. We’re the family of God!
Joey:
Oh, Mr. and Mrs. K**! I bet they could take care of me if my family left without me!
Martha:
YOu just picked them because of J**! She’s way to old for you Joey!
Joey:
No! They’re just really nice! I can tell, because J** is really nice….
Martha:
Right. Joey, why wouldn’t you call my family!? Did you know my mom told me that if there is ever an emergency, I should call your mom! So, you can call my mom, if you’re in trouble.
Joey:
Oh thanks Martha. I feel much better now.
Martha:
Unless my parents are with your parents…
Joey:
Oh no! What then!?
Martha:
Calm down Joey! I was just teasing! I’m sure you’ll figure it out. Don’t forget, God is taking care of you, and the church family will help too! I’m sure if you can’t get my mom, Pastor Miriam or Mrs. P** or Mrs. S** or … **suspicious pause** Mrs. K** will help you.
Joey:
You’re right Martha. Being part of the family of God is great.
Martha:
You know, my mom always skips through most of that story where Jesus gets left behind and just makes me memorize the last part.
Joey:
What part?
Martha:
**reciting from memory** “And Jesus went back home with his parents and was incredibly well behaved and obedient to them for the rest of his childhood, never being to far to hear his mother’s call again.” I think the translation might be my mom’s own.
Joey:
Haha! That does sound like your mom!
