Inspired by Acts 5:17-42
- Joey:
- Hey, Martha, what’s new?
- Martha:
- I was just reading Acts chapter 5.
- Joey:
- … and?
- Martha:
- Do you want me to tell you the story about the apostles going to jail, and their amazing escape, and how they got off the hook?
- Joey:
- Yes! Wait - why were the apostles in jail? Aren’t they the good guys?
- Martha:
- Yes, and they were teaching people about Jesus, but the Sudducees -
- Joey:
- - What kind of juice?
- Martha:
- No - Sadducees - they were religious leaders that didn’t like Jesus.
- Joey:
- oh…
- Martha:
- The Succucees told the apostles to stop teaching people about Jesus, but they wouldn’t, so they were sent to jail.
- Joey:
- But they busted out? Hod did they do it? Did they dig a tunnel? Did they pretend to be sick and then knock the guard unconscious?
- Martha:
- Nope, an angel appeared and unlocked the gates for them when no one was looking.
- Joey:
- Wow - that’s sneaky…
- Martha:
- The angel told the apostles to go out and keep teaching people about Jesus - right in the middle of downtown!
- Joey:
- That would take some guts!
- Martha:
- The Sadducees had a big meeting about what to do. One of them, named Gamaliel, said “Leave these men alone! Let them go! For if their purpose or activity is of human origin, it will fail. But if it is from God, you will not be able to stop these men; you will only find yourselves fighting against God.”
- Joey:
- Fighting against God is never a good idea…
- Martha:
- The apostles were sent away, and they rejoiced and went around teaching everyone they met about Jesus.
- Joey:
- That’s great - I want to teach people about Jesus! Maybe I’ll even get thrown in jail and an angel will help me escape!
- Martha:
- Well, I don’t think that’s very likely. But just in case, you should know that God is always on your side.
- Joey:
- Did you know that Jesus loves you?
- Martha:
- Yes…
- Joey:
- And did you know that Jesus brings salvation?
- Martha:
- Yes…
- Joey:
- Did you know that Jesus has a beard?
- Martha:
- Um… Let’s go get some icecream and we’ll talk about Jesus some more.
- Joey:
- Did you know that Jesus — icecream?! Let’s go!
